Does it really surprise anyone that we had a series of great Steven Universe episodes and that Connie/Ronaldo/Onion weren’t in them?

    Yeah. No surprises.

Home: Adventures with Tip & Oh

    Damn good show that one.

If Undone is on the list, then that’s the Best Animated Show for me hands down. Literally the best acting and fully realized character I’ve seen this year. Literally a perfect season that only needs one.

As a long time lurker and bud of Delaney, here’s my notes!

    Best Animated Show of 2019

Undone –Just an amazing experience from start to stop. If you liked the episode “Remember” from She-Ra, Undone is that plus so much more, amazing performances, perfect blending of rotoscope, CG, 2D hand animation, and oil paintings. Beautiful and inspired plot with real tragic moments. At the end of it I was so angry that I wanted more, but deep down I knew what the real answer of the show was, that for a while I was literally in the same place as Alma. Also great dialogue. Alma is as despicable as she is likable. Also sign language used so well–as a signer, I love that!

This is the first show to touch on the reality of pulling a child from a deaf school because they got an implant. Without it being the focus of hitting you over the head, it’s such a subtle thing to realize how isolating it is to be plucked out of your environment and put into a new one you’re not prepared for. The analogy of Alma’s boyfriend moving to the US from India was so spot on. There’s just so many great things to point out about this show.

Runnerup: She-Ra (Really hitting their stride the last two seasons)

    Best Animation Episode of 2019

“One Crew over the Crewcoo’s Morty” –Clearly made by a staff that hates heist movies as much as they love them. You couldn’t get this insular level of satire from anywhere else.

Best Animation Main Character of 2019

Adora – She-Ra, since sorta leaving the Best Friend Trio, she’s really stepped out on her own and shown what she accepts and doesn’t accept. Nice to see her in a more independent dynamic. She knows the world she’s in, she knows she has to save it, she knows she has the strength to do it… so why are things so complicated and she’s still not happy. It’s great.

Best Animation Supporting Character of 2019

Catra — How is she not on the list? You hate her. You love her. You have no idea what to do with her. You want her to be in charge of everything and go away at the same time. She’s just a ball of conflicting emotions you want to hug and kick away at the same time.

Runner Up: Amaya, The Dragon Prince. She gets slightly more time to shine in the third season and the spotlight on her is the best representation of deaf folk in cartoons period. I’ve made many vids translating her stuff on youtube and the feedback of folks that want to learn ASL because of her is really inspiring.

Best New Animated Show of 2019

    Undone

Best Visuals for an Animated Show of 2019

Undone –The scene where she’s in the hospital and the windows are speeding along as if she’s on a highway, the time when timelapse was used to show her moving the keys, there’s just so many brilliant strokes of direction here. Shame it wasn’t listed as an option–oh wait, it was.

Best Music for an Animated Show of 2019

    Geez…. Hmmmm…

Steven Universe Movie, hands down best earworms of 2019.

Best Animated Show of 2019 – Hard to decide, but I guess SU deserves to win that one, it was an amazing season.

Best Animation Episode of 2019 – The Jelly Lakes without any doubt. That episode was perfect from top to bottom. It is one of the best animated episodes of the decade.

Best Animation Main Character of 2019 – This is obviously personal bias, but I think Bertie is a really important character, no other character in any show, not only animated, represented anxiety and woman’s struggles as well as Bertie. She is a really complex character and she’s likeable without being perfect, she’s far from being perfect.

Best Animation Supporting Character of 2019 – Speckle. I don’t have much to say, Speckle is amazing. I just think Catra deserved a spot in the nominated list, she might’ve actually won if she was there. But from the list, obviously Speckle.

Best New Animated Show of 2019 – God hard to decide between Undone and Tuca and Bertie, but I guess I’m more of a Tuca and Bertie person.

Best Visuals for an Animated Show of 2019 – Now it’s pretty easy to decide. Undone is beautiful. It looks really good and it deserves the fuck out of this prize.

Best Music for an Animated Show of 2019 – Also not hard, SU really deserves to win that one.
