I think you guys overlooked or didn’t mention a layer of meaning behind the title of the episode.
It’s obviously a reference to “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, to a line that begins “Once upon a time, I was falling in love . . .”
Which could refer to both Ruby/Saphire and Rose/Pearl.
About Pearl being given to Pink Diamond, it may be that she never requested to have a Pearl and the diamonds gave her one anyway
