“XCIX” Recap – Samurai Jack

By: Justin Cummings

Justin Cummings and Michelle Anderer discuss the May 6th episode of Samurai Jack, “XCIX”.

I'm currently studying Communication at Lynchburg College with an emphasis in Electronic Media and a double minor in business and gender studies. I've been a huge fan of animation since I was little and thus have very eclectic tastes. Outside of animation I love Survivor, comic books, and a whole treasure trove of other things.

I’m curious: do you guys feel the same way about the Greg/Rose Quartz relationship as you do about Jack and Ashi?

Anyway, I found this to be an enjoyable episode. I think it’s like The Ember Island Player from Avatar: one last lighthearted romp before the dramatic finale.

They wouldn’t have spent an entire episode on developing a romance between Jack and Ashi if it was supposed to just be a one time fling. Personally, I’m fine with the relationship and even support it.

A large age gap hasn’t stopped characters such as Rose Quartz, Wolverine, Liara, Arwen, or the Highlander from hooking up with much younger individuals. I also don’t think there is a huge imbalance of power between Jack and Ashi. This episode highlights that Jack’s developmental and social skills are also somewhat stunted from mostly keeping himself isolated from society and being deprived of a normal life. Each has helped the other work through their severe psychological issues in equal measure.

Their relationship has been continually evolving since episode 4, and the possibility of a romance has been foreshadowed since episode 3. It would have been perfectly fine if their dynamic had been kept platonic, but in my opinion, the romantic attraction makes sense given their similarities and everything they’ve been through. Overall, I just find it satisfying to see two likable characters who have endured so much hardship and abuse manage to attain some measure of happiness.

I didn’t know Dean Martin existed in this universe, you learn something new everyday.

While I am neutral on this ship, I know how you feel. Stay strong.
