The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Retrospective – Overly Animated Podcast #258

By: Justin Cummings

Justin Cummings and Michelle Anderer look back on the 2006 anime film, “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time”.

I'm currently studying Communication at Lynchburg College with an emphasis in Electronic Media and a double minor in business and gender studies. I've been a huge fan of animation since I was little and thus have very eclectic tastes. Outside of animation I love Survivor, comic books, and a whole treasure trove of other things.

The Cat Returns shares many similarities with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. The key difference though is that The Cat Returns ditched the sudden third act romantic arc, and instead, had the main character internalize her recent adventures and become a more self-reliant person. That really resonated with me at the time and was the exact sort of narrative catharsis I was looking for after watching this specific movie. I thought everything else about the Girl That Leapt Through Time great but was just really disappointed by the bow-tie romance at the end that was supposed to cover up the lack of character development.

This is just a guess on my part, but I bet the people that made and wrote this also worked on Summer Wars because that movie has even more flash yet the exact same problems.
