Honestly, I think the biggest problem here isn’t just that we barely know Lapis and have spent so much time with Peridot. The thing is that we didn’t actually get to see how Peridot treated Lapis. That creates some distance between the audience and the issue at hand. SU knows how to pull off “showing, not telling,” and that could have been utilized here. Even a brief flashback could have helped us understand Lapis’ side a little more and make the conflict seem less black and white. (That said, I didn’t dislike Lapis in this episode although I can see why people would find her unsympathetic. I like both Lapis and Peridot and just want them to be roomies, Lapidot or no Lapidot.)

Okay I made this comment before listening to the viewer feedback and you do make this point. Still would have liked a Homeworld flashback because I wanna see Homeworld. 😛

I think the only time I didn’t see Lapis as sympathetic was when she destroyed the tape recorder. Peridot caused Lapis a lot of grief, and now she and Steven are trying to force Lapis into forgiveness ahead of time. Sure, it’s understandable from the audience’s perspective since we know Peridot has changed for the better, but it’s kinda rude of Steven and Peridot to expect Lapis to learn this so quickly.

    • Dylan Hysen says:

Yeah I completely agree, but I wonder if others will see it the same way. A lot of people are so influenced by the emotions the characters are displaying and aren’t thinking about the reasons presented why a character might behave negatively.

Am I the only one who sees similarities with Lapis and Peridot to Katara and Zuko from episode 312 – 316 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I felt the same conflicting feelings.

I understood why Lapis and Katara are pissed off and relate to them, but still I felt bad for Peridot and Zuko in those episodes, we the audience know Peridot and Zuko has changed, but Lapis and Katara don’t see the development, and that is understandable.

    • Dylan Hysen says:

This is a good comparison. A lot of people were pissed at Katara in 312, and I never understood that. The big difference I think is that Peridot is much more sympathetic than Zuko, but I know a lot of people would disagree. But yeah you’re right, both Lapis and Katara haven’t seen that Peri and Zuko have changed, very similar plots.
