    DONGBUFENG LIVES???!!

    Wow.

Guys, I’ve been a listener of your podcast years ago. ATLA was my favorite show ever and I remember listening to ever review show. I see you guys also reviewed Korra, sweet. I just stumbled over this video on youtube and I thought I recognized the voices. Sam distinct voice really tipped me off… then I was like, did one of these people call themselves Dylan? What.

Why isn’t this on Stitcher? You have an RSS feed already, I would love to follow you on Stitcher. I think there’s a wealth of ATLA fans that really respected your show that gravitated to SU and would love to know you’re continuing the commentary.

    • Dylan Hysen says:

loool, hey! Yeah covered Korra, now covering a bunch of stuff here at OVA. DF definitely lives!! Thanks for checking us out again, hope you keep listening! I’ll look into getting this on Stitcher.

I am pretty sure Kevin saying he was too old for them, he was referring to Steven and Connie real age, though he doesn’t Steven is 14.

I think Greg telling Steven never to say hate, and Steven giving into hatred for a bit and learning about that in this episode, that will come later into play when he deals with someone like Jasper.

If Kevin comes back, what like to see perhaps during the next gem invasion or just gem mutants attack, Stevonnie saves Kevin from an enemy attack.

It’s good to see Steven need to have his attitude corrected once and while. He’s a great kid, but has been the voice of “everybody loves me so just do X and the plot can move forward” a bit too often this season.

Glad to see Connie again, I think she needs the most attention. I don’t understand her flaws and folds as well, so she’s a lot like Lapis to me–a character I really want to know more about. Right now I find Connie sorta stretched in a lot of directions:

+ She’s in the episode so that Stevonnie can be in the episode
+She wants to beat Kevin in a race!
+She defuses because she doesn’t want to race Kevin anymore.
+She fuses again because she wants to race Kevin–but on her and Steven’s terms, not just Kevin’s terms.

I get the arc, but it wasn’t really a significant change with an impact outcome like the Peridot, Lars, Sour Cream episodes that happened previously. Sworn to the Sword had a lot of potential for showcasing Connie’s almost unhealthy willingness to follow figures of authority, even to the point where she’s willing to die, I’m really surprised that not much has been done with that character trait.

      • Dylan Hysen says:

Yeah I agree, we’ve been really stagnant with Connie since.. Nightmare Hospital prob. Need more Connie!

I want to see Connie and Sadie interact, not only are they two of my favorite characters, but they are the only humans to defeat a gem on the show, so girl power. Though in Connie’s case, she had Steven’s help, but still she did the offense.

Not much to say on this episode. I enjoyed a lot for the imagery alone it was a very pretty episode, but much like the first episodes this week I don’t really feel compelled to rewatch it. I like genre episodes of shows so I didn’t mind that, and I liked what was done with Stevonnie. I took it how Justin did. But overall I feel like I got all I needed to out of the first viewing and I can just look at gifs for the pretty scenes from now on.
I guess my rating scale is rewatchability? For this week best to not best: The New Lars, Too Short to Ride, Mr. Greg, Beach City Drift,Steven Floats, Drop Beat Dad. The last 3 are pretty interchangeable.

Also: Kiki and Jenny are twins. So Kiki isn’t smaller, she’s also a teen, but she’s not one of the cool teens from that little clique. We don’t know much about her at all compared to Jenny because we never see her. I don’t even know if she has friends. So I’m actually excited for the Kiki episode. The Beach Volleyball episode in s1 was one of my favorites for the boardies so I’ve been wanting to see more of the Pizzas.

Hey these are getting kinda popular, looking at all these comments…nice job ova! But yeah imo this episode was alright but not bad or anything, I liked seeing Stevonnie again…time to wait 20+ episodes to see them again haha

    • Dylan Hysen says:

Unfortunately more comments doesn’t equal a lot more hits, although these probably have been our best performing SU epi discussions, just not by a ton.

  7. Steve says:

On second watch, before the race starts, there is a bird on the road, and when the race starts it flies away, and than stands on the sign. I think I could be Amesthyst.

First of all the background sky is purple, so it hard to tell the color of the bird, we never get a clear look at the bird’s belly which is where Amethyst gem would be, if people can think we purpose don’t see Jasper’s gem in “Super Watermelon Island” than I can theories we don’t see the birds belly for a reason.

Why would that happens, first of all Amethyst go watch a drag race, she has the maturity of a teenager.

Another reason, Greg is going to notice his car is missing, or heck Steven and Connie told them their plan, and he got permission after some conference with Greg and the Crystal Gems, and with Garnet future vision they would be okay, they give Steven and Connie permission, and they secretly sent Amethyst to keep an eye on them.

I could see that being the case, and this be revealed in a future episode, when the events of this episode is brought up.

    • Dylan Hysen says:

Shrug. Seems reasonable based on the episode but I don’t see this as having much of a significance on anything larger than this epi so doubt it’d come up again.

      • Steve says:

I think Steven giving into hate and vengeance that was significant, so it could be brought up again.

If they took the car without permission, someday Steven being the good honest boy that he is, will come clean, and the gems will tell them they knew all along.

They animated the bird flying on the sign, like it was a big deal.
